Audio books...worth it?

So, I'll be honest–I listen to my stories when I'm in the editing process. If a sentence sounds awkward when it's read to me, it needs to go...or at least updated to make it feel natural. How would my character say it?

I use the read aloud feature under review in MS Word. Her voice is really good and can move easily, comfortably through the most erotic moments. But from time to time, she stumbles. She has that artificial clumsiness with a bad pronunciation that yanks me out of the story...she becomes more of a distraction and less of a narrator that is supposed to be helping me get off. But the truth is that when she gets it right...it's pretty erotic.

My voice is not sexy. It's just a fact. I tried recording myself and couldn't stop laughing when I listened to it. But if I can't record myself reading a story, then who will it be?

After a lot of research, I've learned that it's not so easy to turn a book (even a sinfully short one) into an audio book. The more reputable places require that you enter into a long process of seeking a voice actor and then negotiate prices etc etc etc...yuck. I want to hear voice samples and just pick my gal. The lessor reputable places all have AI voices. I'm not against AI (please don't kill me when the great singularity happens, my robot overlords) but so far, the ones I've toyed with all fall prey to the occasional slip, a bad pause or incorrect pronunciation.

And what if there are bits of dialogue involving two or more characters...I’d definitely prefer a different voice for each person. Hmmm...

And here's the part when I'm going to sound sexist. It has to be a woman. Listening to a man's voice reading one of my stories doesn't work for me. It has to be a woman's sexy voice, or I'll never be able to finish. I don't know why. I'm not trying to make a deep point. It's just a fact. I wonder if I'm alone or if I put a lot of effort into it, would it sell? Would my readers listen to a sample and simply move on. I mean, if your smut isn't getting you off, then it's time to find one that will.

One of my girlfriends has a great voice. I really think she could do it and I've playfully suggested as much. But being very prim and proper, I suspect reading my work might be the last time I ever see her! That's an exaggeration but I think it's true that you have to enjoy my kind of humiliation smut if it's going to sound sexy.

I'm very curious to know if anyone uses an app to read their stories. Should I try and make an audio book? Is it worth it?
